Contract Summary:

The Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) is one of the national scientific research laboratories in the UK operated by The Science and Technology Facilities Council. It is located on the Harwell Science and Innovation Centre Campus at Chilton, Oxfordshire with a staff of 1,200 people and supports the work of over 10,000 scientists and engineers chiefly from the university research community.

As part of its ongoing programme of works to extend and upgrade the site’s electrical infrastructure TES were awarded the contract involving the refurbishment of Substations 12 and 15: new HV and LV switchgear and the supply and installation of new HV and LV switchgear for substations 20 and 21 with the associated civil and electrical works. (TES had previously successfully completed, Feb. 2011, a similar HV and LV £1.55m switchgear contract for a new Substation 9 and Substation 13 upgrade.)

Contract Specifications:

TES were responsible for all MEICA and Civil Works: supply and  installation of new HV and LV switchgear, new HV and LV cabling installation, plant/cable connections, testing and  commissioning, the civil and building services upgrades and undertook the role of Principal Contractor with the associated Health and Safety duties. The Contract Works included for :

Substation 12

  • Provision and installation of a new15 panel 11 kV vacuum switchboard with bus-coupler;
  • Provision and installation of new 1.25MVA Midel transformer and connection to existing LV switchboard;
  • Provision and installation from Substation 12 of new fully rated HV supplies to Substation 10 and new Substation 36 and new LV supply  to Building R52;
  • Earthing system upgraded for new HV, LV plant and new earth rod system for Substation 36;
  • Provision and installation of new fibre optic cabling for remote switching and future site wide SCADA  monitoring;
  • Substation 12 building services upgrade: lighting, small power and data and heating systems;
  • Civil works associated with installation of new plant, trenching and ducting within Substation 12, new Substation 36,  Substation 10 and Building R52.

Substation 15

  • Provision and installation of a new 11 kV vacuum switchboard with bus-coupler— installed in two phases;
  • Earthing system upgrade for new HV plant;
  • Provision and installation of new fibre optic cabling for remote switching and future site wide SCADA  monitoring;
  • Substation 15 building services upgrade: lighting, small power and data and heating systems;
  • Civil works associated with installation of new plant, internal wall arrangements, trenching and ducting.
